About

Hi, my name is Spencer Bean.

You can find me on TwitterFacebook, and LinkedIn. You can also view my resume.

My Major

I’m currently a student at the BYU Marriott School pursuing a Master’s degree in Information Systems.

My Job

My day job is working for the Office of Information Technology (OIT) at BYU. In October 2010, after over two years of working for the Training department, I switched departments and began working for the Infrastructure Tools team. My specific duties have included creating a training video for all of OIT to view, learning and implementing the Service Now system (which is the back-end behind it.byu.edu), and meeting with other organizations to determine business needs, translate those needs into software solutions, implement them, and assist those organizations in the transition phase.

While working for the Training department from ’08-’10, I gained invaluable experience working with Adobe Create Suite CS4 and CS5, Microsoft Office 2007 and 2010, and Mac iLife ’09 by teaching classes to students and employees, building robust lesson plans, and creating new activities to demonstrate the principles being taught.

My specialty at Training was eLearning. My responsibilities included refining the curriculum for our Adobe Captivate class, finding new and innovative ways to teach Adobe Captivate, and answering any questions about Captivate from all departments on BYU campus.

My Freelance Work

Recently I’ve become a WordPress enthusiast, helping local companies and organizations build and manage their own simple WordPress sites. I also spend time tutoring kids in HTML, CSS, and mobile app development.

My Contract Work

In addition, I periodically do independent contract work as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Certiport, Inc. Certiport is contracted by Microsoft to create the international certification exams for Microsoft software. I have been involved in determining the exam objectives, writing test questions, and setting the cut score for the following certification exams:

My Life

But that’s just school and work. In my spare time I like to play tennis, do home improvement projects,  spend time with my wife, play with our two sweet shelter dogs, and wear my Chacos and FiveFinger shoes. I also enjoy playing the piano and guitar, participating in local community theater, and meeting with guys from the ISYS program to talk about business ideas.
